Gym Rats 2010 Win USSSA Crown: The Spiece Gym Rats 2010, formerly the Indiana Sharks, racked up a perfect 6-0 record -- with wins over the Indiana Blue Devils, Northwest Ohio Basketball Club, PAL Elite Black, PAL Elite Red, Spiece Gym Rats (Foust) and Spiece Gym Rats (Jewell) -- to win the USSSA State Chamionship this weekend in Fort Wayne. Coached by Sherron Wilkerson, the Gym Rats' roster boasts many Southern Indiana preps, including A.J. Adams (Jeffersonville), Keegan Clark (Jeffersonville), Michael Howard (Edinburgh), Jordy Martin (New Albany), Steven Mayfield (Henryville), Dylan McDaniel (New Albany) and Ben Raichel (Austin), who join a small contingent of players from both the north and Louisville, Ky. [5/19/2008]

Miles Mitchell and Sean Samsel, players from duPont Manual, are the players from Louisville that played on this championship team. Mitchell was huge in the championship game by scoring 16 points (4 3's) in the second half. Samsel played really well at the point and as the 2 guard. He sees the floor very well by making awesome passes to set up open looks and easy baskets. Don't have the exact stats, but Samsel had many assists and around 20 points per game in the quarter, semis, and final game.

Spiece gym rats 2010 went to the final four in the Memorial Run and Slam event this past weekend. In that event they beat Lou Will the Elite team out of Georgia, who made it to the final four in the King James event. Miles Mitchell came through with some clutch 3's in that game to spark a huge win.

Samsel who is now 6' tall, is really stepping up his game. In the quarter final game he had 27 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the three against the Spiece NW team which is based out of the Gary In area(Chicagoland). Again when he ran the point, he made some good decisions and created shots for his teamates. Mitchell was the recipient of many of Samsel's dimes. Keegan Clark sprained his ankle in this game and couldn't play in the semi's.

Kids to watch on this team are Keegan Clark and AJ Adams (Jeffersonville), Rich Leslie (Laporte), Sean Samsel, and Miles Mitchell (Louisville Manual).

I really need to get out and see Samsel on the AAU circuit. Saw him several times during the year and wasn't that impressed, but sounds like he's balling.

Im with you Chris, I dont know what to believe. From what ive seen of him last year, he's at best 5'10 and against stronger competition only looks for a shot instead of running an offense. which might be the reason I didnt see him as much toward the end of the season. He transferred from St X last year. Their Varsity coach would be a good place to start.

Offensive player only, nothing on the defensive end. He's a serious snowbird.

Samsel played the 2 guard last year and wasn't expected to run the team. Manual was in very capable hands with Aaron Williams running the point. Samsel played the way his coach asked him to play, which was catch and shoot. This year when playing the point he has done a good job of setting his teamates up for good shots. Summer league ball has shown he can make this happen. Wed night against Fern Creek and Southern he scored 18 and 17 points while handing out double digits assists in each game. It didn't hurt that Jenkins hit about every shot he put up. :)

Slipscreen you bring up a good point on leaking out after a shot goes up, but I haven't seen the snowbirding as you call it. We don't know what the coaches tell these kids to do when on the court. Maybe he is told to get out on the break, who knows.

I think there is alot of upside potential with Samsel being only a Junior to be. The next two years will tell the tale. He is growing and is taller than 5'10" which is where he was at the end of last year.

I was there too. He can shoot, i'll give you that. But last year, most Sophmores tended to fly under the radar. He will struggle posting numbers like he did last night after being scouted.
I have no problem with "fathers" coming on here and posting hype about their son, I just hope you take it with a grain of salt when the reaction is not what you expected. Reality check, love is blind.
I noticed he is playing for a Indiana based AAU team, why? We outnumber them in AAU teams 10-1 in Louisville and Shawn would get more recognition here. Was he asked, and by who over here? (I cannot think of any team in Indiana south of Indy that is any better than 5-6 Louisville based teams).
I pulled up information on the quote you made declaring "Indiana state U.S.S.S.A. State champs". Although I applaude any team winning any tournement, I fail to see any teams that I know of through years of personal experience being in that one. I didnt not see any Indiana Elite teams in it, And I know of several "other" worthy contenders that failed to enter that one. (USSSA is a newly developed league to compete against AAU and is not recognized by most competetive team as of yet) To some, its sounds like your team is great, but to the ones that know much about USSSA, its kinda funny seeing you boasting about it as if your the best team in the state. ( I also noticed you entered the AAU State tourney a week later and played a Indiana Elite team- lost by 35)
Taller than 5'10? nah, he just needs a haircut.
